Before starting this company, I worked for a larger painting contractor here in British Columbia. We completed tons of projects, but something frequently didn’t sit right with me. There was a lack of systems. Communication was often unclear. In my opinion, clients weren’t really being heard. Jobs seemed transactional and impersonal, when they should have been more thoughtful and collaborative. One incident stands out as a clarifying moment for me: Finishing up a residential interior project, a homeowner asked if I could take care of a small additional task. It would have taken about twenty minutes. As I was about to help, the project manager quietly pulled me aside and told me not to do it because it wasn’t part of the original scope of work– it made no sense. Where was the customer care? That was the moment I decided to build something different.
In the spring of 2008, I went all in. At that time, we were starting our family. Our first child was only eight months old. Launching a business in that season of life was a real risk — but it was also an opportunity.
